Last year’s Ruckus at the Rec drew about 700 people. The Halloween party happens this year from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. (Submitted photo)
By Jean Schlegel Valley City Parks and Recreation is planning the annual Halloween event Ruckus at the Rec from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Recreation Center gymnasium. “Last year’s Halloween party was an overwhelming success,” says Diane Sommerfeld, Parks and Rec administrative assistant. Recreation Manager Amy Pederson said about 700 people attended the party last year. “It should be a fun time,” she said. “But we still need volunteers to help us. Last year, we had about 75 volunteers, and we’re only halfway there so far. We need more volunteers.” Ruckus at the Rec offers a variety of carnival games, with prizes, for children ages pre-school through sixth-grade. Community and surrounding area businesses and organizations, as well as interested individuals, assist with activities. The Parks and Recreation office provides prizes, but volunteers are needed to assist in running the activities. Each booth needs three to four volunteers, so the more volunteers, the more fun for the kids, according to Pederson. Those unable to volunteer may donate pumpkins, candy, food coupons and money. Children and parents are encouraged to dress up in costumes to add to the Halloween atmosphere. This is a safe and exciting evening for the youth and families in and around the Valley City area. Donations will be taken at the door for the Barnes County Food Pantry. The Valley City Lions will be collecting used eyeglasses. Anyone interested in participating in Ruckus at the Rec may contact the Valley City Parks and Recreation office at (701) 845-3294.
