This Winter Show, three men will be honored for their contributions to agriculture.
The 2009 Crop Show will be dedicated to the late Arnold H. “Bud” Berg of Barney, N.D.
Berg, who passed away on May 10, 1990, at the age of 79, will be honored for his contributions to the development of certified seed and foundation seed stock, and his lifelong work to improve crop yields and quality.
The North Dakota Agricultural Hall of Fame committee will induct Walt Haberman and the late Mel Maier into the North Dakota Agriculture Hall of Fame on Saturday, March 7, at 1:45 p.m. in the Main Arena of the North Dakota Winter Show Event Center.
“By honoring these people, it helps to promote agriculture among our youth,” said Nancy Allen, Winter Show manager.
The  Agricultural Hall of Fame was created in 1997 by an act of the legislature drafted by District 24 representatives Gereld Gerntholz and Lee Sabby, to honor the men and women who have dedicated their lives to the state's leading industry.
Gerntholz and Dennis Hoye are the two Winter Show representatives to the Hall of Fame committee.
“The Hall of Fame was created to recognize men and women who've made contributions in various ways to agriculture, whether it's farming or ranching,” Gerntholz said.
Walt Haberman has been an Angus cattle breeder for nearly 60 years, and is currently active in promoting Future Farmers of America and 4-H club livestock activities. He exhibited his first Angus at the 1949 Winter Show.
“We've been in love with the Winter Show since 1949, and I'm honored to be selected,” Haberman said.
Haberman had been nominated in previous years, according to Hoye, and was elected to the Hall of Fame at the November meeting for contributions to the cattle business in LaMoure.
Maier, who passed away in 1997, is being recognized for contributions to the North Dakota wheat industry. Maier worked in Rotterdam, Netherlands from 1967 to 1972, as European director of Great Plains Wheat, working to expand exports on behalf of seven state wheat commissions, according to a press release from the Winter Show. After his return to North Dakota, he worked as administrator of the state wheat commission.
