Staff report
Valley City Times-Record

A weekend trip to Devils Lake turned out to be a huge success for the Valley City wrestling team.
After defeating the Firebirds 58-17 in a dual Friday night, Valley City turned that momentum into a tournament championship on Saturday in the Dennis Flynn Memorial Wrestling Tournament.
The Hi-Liners held off Wahpeton and Fargo North in a tight three-way race. Travis VanHal and Garrett Andel picked up individual titles as they led the Hi-Liners to 197 team points, just barely ahead of Wahpeton (195.5) and North (194.5).
Andel was named Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament for his efforts in the 171 pound weight class. VanHal’s championship was his first individual tournament title, which he earned with a 6-2 decision over North’s Max Sommerfeld, the No. 2-ranked wrestler at 140 pounds.
Eight Hi-Liner wrestlers advanced to the finals of the tournament with Shane Undem (112), Brandon Larson (135), Kyle Fogarty (145), Jordan Jacob (152), Nick Horner (215) and Alex Andel (285) picking up second-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
Up next: The Hi-Liners open their home schedule, hosting West Fargo on Thursday, Dec. 4.
