By Mark Potts Valley City Times-Record Balanced scoring. It’s what helped carry the Valley City State women’s basketball team over the University of Minnesota-Crookston last Tuesday and it’s what carried the Vikings over the William Penn Lady Statesmen Saturday afternoon. Four Vikings scored in double figures and seven players scored at least eight points as the Vikings controlled the game from start to finish in a 79-65 win over William Penn. “We did a really good job of executing our game plan,” said VCSU head coach Jill DeVries. “Particularly on the defensive side.” After trailing by 10 at halftime, the Lady Statesmen pulled to within four when Viking center Abby Rittenhouse left the game with her fourth foul at the 11 minute mark of the second half. Valley City would not be phased though, getting four points from backup center Andrea Hummel and 3-pointers from Caitlyn Wojahn and Emily Goedert as they outscored William Penn 15-7 with Rittenhouse out and built a 69-57 lead. “Andrea (Hummel) has gotten just a lot more confident and a lot better as the season has gone on, she’s played well,” DeVries said of the team not missing a beat with Rittenhouse out. “I think we’re confident on the perimeter offensively too, so we don’t always have to rely on throwing it in there.” For full story see Monday's edition of the Valley City Times-Record.
