VCSU Women Sweep at DSU Tourney
Two games in two days at the Dickinson State University Milanovich Basketball Classic yielded two wins for Valley City State University as they pushed their overall record to 5-1 on the season.
In their second game with the Blue Eagles in a week, VCSU's Brittany Lehner led the Vikings to a 61-52 win over DSU Saturday to close out the tournament. Lehner scored 16 points on 5-8 shooting from the floor and also went 6-10 from the free-throw line.
Although the play wasn't as crisp offensively as their tournament opening win over Rocky Mountain, the Vikings defense stymied DSU, forcing 25 turnovers and limiting the Blue Hawks to 3-16 shooting from the 3-point line.
Courtney Titus and Sadiqah Jihad also hit double figures for Valley City State, chipping in with 12 and 10 points respectively. Katie Ralston led VCSU with eight rebounds.
The win is the Vikings' fifth straight. They'll travel to Bismarck Tuesday for an exhibition with the University of Mary, an NCAA Division II opponent.
Friday, the Viking women team again eclipsed the 50 percent shooting mark with a 79-67 win over Rocky Mountain College.
Valley City State shot 20-31 (64.5 percent) from the floor in the first half, then shot an efficient 13-28 (46.4 percent) in the second half in the win. The Vikings did it both inside and outside hitting 6-12 (50 percent) from the three point line in the first half and shooting 44.4 percent from beyond the arc for the game.
Ralston led the way for VCSU with 17 points on 7-9 shooting including 3-4 from the 3-point line. Ralston was followed by post players Brittany Lehner with 16 points and Alyssa Hummel who dumped in 12 to round out the double digit Viking scorers.
VCSU Men go 1-1
After dropping the first game at the Dickinson State's Milanovich Classic Friday, No. 24 VCSU responded with a double-digit win over the host Blue Hawks 79-65 Saturday, finishing the tournament with a split.
A season high five Vikings scored in double figures in the game. Sekani Milligan shot 9-17 on his way to a game high 22 points. Gus Kueber narrowly missed a double double, scoring 19 points and pulling down eight rebounds.
Aaron Duske scored 12 and AJ McDonald and Anthony Saavedra scored ten points each to round out the double-digit scorers for VCSU.
The Vikings controlled the boards in the game as well, out rebounding their counterparts 41-33 in the game. Dillan Ostrom led the way pulling down 10 caroms for the Vikings.
With the victory, the Vikings move to 5-2 on the season. Valley City State travels to Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Tuesday for an exhibition game.
Friday, Rocky Mountain College took advantage at the free-throw line,scoring nearly a quarter of their points from the charity stripe in an 83-78 loss for VCSU.
Statistically the Vikings won nearly every category, with the exception of free throws where Rocky Mountain College shot 25-32 (78.1 percent) to Valley City State's 5-8 (62.5 percent).
Valley City State was led by Sekani Milligen who scored 24 points on 8-12 shooting including 7-10 from the 3-point line. Gus Kueber and AJ McDonald also scored double figures for the Vikings with 16 and 13 each.
