VCSU Wom Win 8th Straight

December 10, 2012

Special to the Times-Record
The No. 19 Valley City State University womens basketball team's defense was on display Friday as the Vikings beat Trinity Bible College 78-45 in their eighth straight win this season.
Trinity Bible shot the ball well in the first half, jumping out to a 6-0 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers to start the game, while shooting 4-6 from the 3-point line in the first half to keep within reach at halftime.
However, the Vikings turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and forced 26 turnovers in the game and out-rebounded the Lions 46-26.
Five Vikings scored at least eight points, led by Stephanie Pedersen who came off the bench to score 15 on 7-10 shooting. Kelsey Hunter also came off the bench to hit double figures with 11 points.
VCSU men win 75-65
The No. 17 VCSU mens team team led from start to finish, but the visiting Lions wouldn't go away as the Vikings held on for a 75-65 win at home.
Valley City State started the game on an 18-4 run and it looked as though they would run away with the game but Trinity Bible would be heard in the second half. The Lions, down 18 points at the break, fired away from the 3-point line in the second half, shooting 7-13 from beyond the arc, but they couldn't get the Viking lead to single digits.
The Vikings shot 46.9 percent in the second half and 51.7 percent for the game but struggled from the three point line shooting only 7-25 (28 percent) from long distance. Valley City State however, controlled the boards out rebounding Trinity Bible 45-31.
Offensively, three Vikings hit the double digit scoring mark, led by Sekani Milligen who tallied 20 points on 7-11 shooting including 6-10 from the 3-point line. Milligen narrowly missed a double double, snagging nine rebounds for the game. Aaron Duske and Gus Kueber followed Millgen with 16 and 14 points respectively.
Both teams have this week off for finals before traveling south next week for games with Northern New Mexico College and Johnson and Wales (Colo.) University.
