VCSU softball ups win streak to four games

March 16, 2012

Jen Shadlock (VCSU)

The Valley City State University softball team avenged a tough loss from last year’s spring break and received a quality win to end the day to complete another two game sweep in Florida.
In game one, tied 2-2 in the top of the seventh, a Jane Pettit single scored the game winning run to fend off Trinity Christian College by a score of 3-2. The Vikings lost 2-0 to TCC last year.
Trinity Christian scored in the home half of the first after a miss played ground ball from the Trolls lead-off hitter and then a failed bunt recovery brought the runner in to score. Valley City State would score one each in the top of the third and fourth to take a 2-1 lead before a botched double play ball scored another unearned for Trinity Christian.
Jen Shadlock threw a complete game, allowing six hits, striking out six and walking none. That set up the game winning hit from Pettit in the top of the seventh. Pettit collected two RBI in the game while right fielder Hayley Bevan picked up two hits to lead the Vikings.
The Vikings earned a solid win over a quality team to finish the day and the sweep, beating Missouri Baptist 2-1. The Spartans, who came into the game 8-4 and undefeated on their spring break trip, scored an unearned run in the top of the first, then Katie McBride turned into an animal in the circle.
McBride gave up just one hit the rest of the way, relying on solid defensive effort from Valley City State. McBride struck out five and walked three to pick up the win for the Vikings.
Pettit, along with Adrianna Boychuk collected two hits, but it was the RBI effort of Hilary Kulczewski to lead the Viking offense. Kulczewski’s sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the third to plate Pettit, tied the game at one a piece, then a Kulczewski single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth, plated Boychuk for the winning run.
The sweep ups the Vikings’ win streak to four games and puts their overall record at 6-5. The trip ends Thursday with games against Saint Mary of the Woods at 9 a.m. and Spring Arbor University at 1 p.m. before finishing with an exhibition game versus Milligen University at 3 p.m.
