Katie McBride

The Valley City State University softball team scored first, scored often, and got back-to-back shutouts from Katie McBride and Jen Shadlock to sweep the Concordia College Cobbers 11-0 and 8-0 in doubleheader action.
In game one, the Vikings plated five in the top of the first and six in the top of the second than cruised to the 11-0 victory. Jane Pettit got the scoring going with an RBI single, plating Shayna Taffinder who singled to lead off the inning. Shadlock scored on a passed ball for the Vikings second run of the game before Hilary Kulczewski scored Pettit with a bloop single over the drawn in infield. Emma Nelson concluded the scoring of the inning picking up a big two out two RBI double to make it 5-0.
Kulczewski added the exclamation point in the top of the first with first career grand slam. She finished with five RBI. In total, the Vikings had 13 hits, led by Pettit who went 3-3 in the game. Taffinder, Kulczewski, and Adrianna Boychuk all had two hits each.
McBride was dominant in the circle, limiting the Cobbers to three hits, while striking out eight and walking none. It was McBride’s fourth win of the season.
The second game was much of the same. The Vikings scored three runs in the top of the first, the first on a Shadlock solo home run, her first of the season. Valley City State would tack on two more in the top of the third and three in the top of the sixth to complete the game scoring.
The Vikings again tallied double digit hits with eleven. Caitlin Giesbrecht led the way with a three for three performance while Boychuk and Cyndi Figol collected two hits each. Figol also drove in three runs.
Shadlock picked up her fifth win of the season allowing only two hits, striking out three and walking one.
The Vikings played solid defense, committing zero errors on the day.
With the sweep Valley City State moves to 9-6 on the season. The Vikings will be on the road Tuesday at NCAA Division II Bemidji State before traveling to Sioux City, IA to play in a three day tournament beginning Friday, March 30.
