VCSU Men's Golf 8th at MCAC/North Star Conference Championships
Valley City State men’s golf took eighth place in April 26 and 27’s MCAC/North Star Conference Championship meet in Nebraska.
Men’s teams played 36 holes on April 26’s Day 1 before April 27’s scheduled third round was canceled due to rain. The Vikings shot a 337 in the first round, then improved by 20 shots with a 317 in the second round.
Freshman Jake Richels shot a first-round 83, then came back with a team-best 74 in the second to tie for 20th. Sophomore Darren Young (80 and 81) tied for 25th, and sophomore Ben Sorenson (87 and 80) tied for 32nd. Junior Shane Ost (87 and 84) took 35th, and senior Casey Colemer (92 and 82) finished 37th.
“Richels was impressive for a freshman, having only seen the course the day before,” Viking head coach Jamie Paurus said.
Bellevue University (Neb.) won the tournament by 28 shots with a two-round total of 572 (280 and 292). Bellevue sophomore Mike Hannon won the individual race with a 141 (69 and 72).
Competitors on the women’s side played 18 holes on Day 1 before Day 2’s second round was rained out. Valley City State sophomore Haley Christofferson carded a 100 in the opening round and tied for 18th out of 29 golfers.
“We didn’t get many practices or much competition in before, due to weather,” Paurus said. “The guys aren’t used to 36 holes on the first day and 18 on the second. It was a grueling 36 holes on a longer Day 1, on a course with a 75 rating. On Day 2 it wasn’t safe to play 18.”
