VCSU Football Gets 2nd Shutout of Season
The Valley City State University recovered from last weekend's loss to Jamestown with a 27-0 win over at Lindenwood University — Belleville Saturday in Belleville, Ill.
It was the second shutout of the year for the Vikings, who beat Gustavus Adolphus 16-0 earlier this month.
The Vikings got on the board early following a pass interception at their own 49-yard line. On the ensuing drive, VCSU took the ball 51 yards, losing a few yards early, but making up for it with a 54-yard pass from Tommy Zinke to Colby Lum.
The Viking scored a minute later on a 32-yard field goal by Thomas Cortez to make it 10-0. A 20-yard field goal by Cortez later gave VCSU a 13-0 lead at halftime.
VCSU then scored another touchdown on their first possession of the second half. The Vikings got the ball at their own 22 and quickly worked across the field, moving 78 yards in six plays. Zinke connected with Lum again on a 42-yard touchdown pass. The Vikings scored once more on a four-yard run by Derek Elliot with 9:13 left in the game.
Zinke finished the game 9-16 for 169 yards. His top receiver was Lum, whose only two catches were touchdowns for a combined 96 yards. Ken Eliacin had three receptions for 43 yards. Derek Elliot led the team with 83 yards rushing and Taylor Cino had 76.
The Vikings forced two fumbles, although defensive statistics were not available at press time.
VCSU finishes the regular season Saturday against Robert Morris. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Lokken Stadium,
