VCSU FB Team Gets Votes In Poll

August 15, 2013

The Valley City State football team received votes in the NAIA Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll released on Monday.
The Vikings received 15 votes in the poll, dropping out of the Top 25 after being ranked No. 24 in both last year's postseason poll and this year's spring poll. VCSU is coming off a 7-3 season in 2012 and is the only team in the Dakotas that received votes in the preseason poll.
The Vikings will have a chance to shake up the poll when they play at top-ranked Morningside (Iowa) on Sept. 7.
Morningside was the national runner-up in 2012 and claimed the top spot in the preseason poll after receiving four first-place votes. Morningside returns nine offensive starters off last year's team that went 13-1. VCSU hosted Morningside in 2011, and played at Morningside in 2012, both times suffering losses to the Mustangs.
Defending national champion Marian (Ind.) received eight first-place votes and is rated No. 2. Missouri Valley, Saint Xavier (Ill.) and Saint Francis (Ind.) round out the Top 5.
Valley City State opens the 2013 season Aug. 31 with a road game at rival Jamestown College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
