VCSU Earns Ranking

January 17, 2013

Valley City State University recently earned the distinction of being ranked number 22 in the second edition of U.S. News and World Reports Best Online Graduate Education programs and was the only North Dakota college or university to be ranked in its category.

“VCSU can rightfully be proud of the new tradition that has emerged with two consecutive years of being ranked in this category. It illustrates the consistency and strong academic quality and rigor within VCSU’s Master of Education and the national reputation the program has earned,” said Dr. Steve Shirley, president of VCSU in a press release.

“VCSU is committed to this program which is highly accessible, is of high quality, and meets the needs of education professionals throughout North Dakota and beyond. This latest national recognition is a clear sign of that committment and success.

Rankings are determined based on surveys submitted by school faculty, according to Terry Corwin, VCSU Director of Graduate Studies and Research. VCSU faculty had only a month to complete the surveys.

“It was time-consuming but worth it,” said Corwin.

This was the second time VCSU’s graduate program was ranked by the magazine. Last year the school ranked 51 for Student Services and Technology, 57 for Faculty Credentials and Training and 53 for Student Engagement and Accreditation.

This year’s combined ranking made it easier to understand, said Corwin.
Pleased, Corwin considers the ranking “a pat on the back.”

“You know you’re doing it right,” she said.

Reasons she believes VCSU earned such a high ranking included the school’s size, its affordability and its online accessiblility.

To be chosen for such an honor with a program that is so young – the graduate program began in 2005 – was very good, according to Corwin.
