Staff report
The Valley City State University cross-country and track & field teams are getting a new coach, and one with plenty of NCAA Division I experience no less.
Ken Frenette, who spent 23 years coaching the mens and womens cross country teams Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., was named the Vikings' new head coach in a release Friday.
“We are extremely excited to hire someone with Ken’s ability and Division I experience in cross-country and track," VCSU athletic director Jack Denholm said in the release. "His record of success both athletically and academically while at Campbell University make an outstanding fit for the priorities of Viking athletics.”
A certified USA Level II Track and Field coach in the middle and long distance events, Coach Frenette earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education from Campbell University.
In his time with the Campbell programs, Frenette became a four time conference cross country Coach of the Year honoree and also served as director of the middle and long distance program in the spring, instructing Campbell’s distance runners during the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons.
Campbell athletes earned all-conference honors in cross country 50 times under Frenette. In track, his distance runners brought home 113 all-conference accolades.
As a student, Frenette was one of Campbell University’s top distance runners from 1984-88 and won the Big South Conference individual cross country championship twice. He still holds three records at the University.
As head coach, Frenette’s responsibilities will include scheduling of competitions and practices; recruiting, coaching, mentoring and retaining student athletes; monitoring annual budgets; supervising assistant coaches; fostering strong alumni relations and meeting all institutional, and NAIA rules and regulations.
Vikings named players of the week
VCSU basketball players swept the Dakota Athletic Conference player of the week awards for the third straight week.
Sophomores Aaron Duske and Brittany Lehner were given the awards following wins at Northern New Mexico last week.
Lehner had 20 points and eight steals in the Vikings' 74-55 win over the Eagles. In the game she went 8-10 from the field with one 3-pointer. She also went 3-3 in free throws.
Duske finished with a double-double in the 84-73 win against the Eagles. He had 11 rebounds and 17 points, which included a 9-10 performance at the free-throw line.
