VCSU Choir to Raise Funds

September 11, 2012

Valley City State University Concert Choir will hold its annual end-of-summer rummage sale on Saturday, which is the main fundraiser done by the choir.

Christopher Redfearn, director of choral activities who has a doctorate in music, said the sale is “our primary means to raise money for our fall and spring tours that the choir undertakes across North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.”

The rummage sale has been held for years and has proven to be quite successful in the past. The sale, which is held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Foss Music Hall on the VCSU campus, has generated enough funds to be the only major fundraiser done by the choir.

Redfearn said that while it’s his first year at VCSU, his students have told him that the rummage sale seems to be a community-wide event. A wide range of people, from students and faculty at VCSU to residents across the community, have donated items for the sale. Many items are still being sorted through, but Redfearn said they’ve already received a mini refrigerator and golf equipment.

Redfearn expects a larger number of items to be donated this week. In the past the sale has had exercise equipment and furniture.

“It appears to be some fairly substantial items,” Redfearn said.

Donations are being accepted through Friday.

“People can bring anything they want to Foss Hall and drop it off there in the office, and we’ll find a home for it,” Redfearn said. “If anybody’s doing some fall cleaning and would like to donate to our cause, we’d be happy to take them.”

Members of the concert choir will be participating in the fundraiser either by hanging up flyers around town, tagging and sorting through donations or manning the sale on Saturday.

“We encourage everybody to come out and support the choir and see if there’s anything they might need for their home,” Redfearn said.
