May 16, 2012

Eydie Wagar, speech director at Valley City High School, presents awards to speech students.

Students in grades 9-12 from Valley City High School were recognized for their achievements in fine arts Monday evening at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

Awards were given in various fine arts programs at VCHS to students who excelled in various programs of fine arts throughout the school year.

The evening began with speech awards. Guest speaker Kristofer Kracht, a 1996 VCHS graduate, spoke to the audience about his time on Mrs. Langdahl’s VCHS speech team.

He was also there to present Saidee Oberlander with the Sherry and Jim Langdahl Gustavus Speech Summer Institute Scholarship. This scholarship, which is the start of an annual award, allows Oberlander to attend the speech camp this summer at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Kracht, together with fellow SSI coach Darcy Bakkegard, presented this award as a way to give back to Valley City. Kracht is currently director of forensics at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.

“It’s wonderful that one of my students has the opportunity to attend this Summer Speech Institute on scholarship,” said Eydie Wagar, speech director at VCHS.

The evening continued with students receiving awards in art, yearbook, drama, journalism and instrumental and vocal music. A reception followed with refreshments and performances by speech students.
