VC seeks PD chief applicants

March 9, 2012

As of Wednesday, the city has received 11 applications for the open Valley City Chief of Police position.

City Administrator David Schelkopf reported that the opening was posted ten days ago, but that no local candidates have applied for the job so far. All current applicants are from out of state.

“It looks like a couple others are talking about it locally, I just had a city officer come in and talk to me about it yesterday, so I’m pretty certain there will be local people applying for this position,” he said. ‘We’re going to have a large group of people to look at.”

Schelkopf said the Chief of Police position is going to be posted until March 31, and the interview process will start in April.

“We’ll go through and pick out anywhere between six and ten candidates that make us want to take the next step,” he said. “Then there will be a phone conversation with those candidates, and we’ll boil it down to three or four.”

In-person interviews will take place at that point. Schelkopf said a hiring committee will be formed which will include himself, at least two city commissioners and other city managers.

Valley City has been without an officially appointed police chief for six months, following the retirement of former chief Dean Ross.

According to the City’s job posting, job requirements for the police chief include supervising personnel, directing overall operations, preparing the departmental budget and coordinating with other city agencies.

Qualified applicants should have a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology or a related field, and five years of progressively responsible experience as a police officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

A State Peace Officer’s License, a valid North Dakota Driver’s license no later than 6 months after hiring, as well as First Responder and Firearm Certifications are required.
