Wilbur Gabel and his grandsons Noah and Cameron Gabel, all from Valley City, competed in the North Dakota State Horseshoe Singles and the State Horseshoe Doubles competitions over the last two weekends in Fargo and Jamestown.
Wilbur took home the Elders Singles Title for the second year in a row. Noah brought home the Cadet Singles Championship for the third time, while Cameron placed third in State Singles Junior division.
Noah and his partner, Matt Trader from Grand Forks, won the North Dakota Class A Doubles Horse Shoe Title when they beat out his Grandpa and his partner, Carol Peterson from Bismarck, both of whom are past State Doubles Champions, in a tiebreaker. Matt, 11, and Noah, 10, may be the youngest Doubles team to win a State Class A Championship anywhere in the country. Noah is a past World Champion, and both Matt and Noah have won North Dakota Single Titles in the past.
Cameron and his partner, Jennifer Trader from Grand Forks, took 3rd. Matt and his sister Jennifer Trader are the Grandchildren of Valley City’s Roger & Marlene Bishoff.
While competing this summer in the World Horseshoe Championships held in St. George, Utah, Noah and Matt qualified for the Championship round with Noah capturing 4th and Matt taking 5th. Wilbur placed 8th in his division and Cameron placed 6th in his division. Next summer they all plan on attending the World Horseshoe Championships held in Buffalo, New York.
