April 22, 2014

Responders from several agencies, including the Valley City Fire Department, the Valley City Police Department, the Barnes County Sheriff's Office and Valley Water Rescue worked together in the recovery of a VCSU student who drowned in the Sheyenne River Monday.

Valley City State University President Dr. Steve Shirley said in an email to the university community that the male student whose body was discovered in the Sheyenne River Tuesday morning is Dan Buehner.

"Dan was a senior majoring in business administration and played catcher on the VCSU Baseball Team," Shirley said. "He was from Blaine, Minn.and attended high school at Centennial High. I will pass along more information as we have it regarding pending arrangements."

Buehner's body was found Tuesday at 10:20 a.m. under the Eighth Avenue Bridge over the Sheyenne River in southwest Valley City.

The man went into the river early Monday when the rubber raft carrying him and two other students capsized. Two of the students were rescued and taken to Mercy Hospital where they were treated for hypothermia. First responders from various agencies searched the river below the Little Dam in Valley City all day Monday and Tuesday morning. More in Wednesday's Times-Record.
