Thursday, January 12
Valley City High School Jr./Sr. High Art Show, 6:30 p.m. @ VCHS

Friday, January 13
Valley City hosts the ND Special Olympics Winter Games beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, January 13, with opening ceremonies being held at the City Auditorium. Any interested volunteers should contact SOND Director of Sports, Reid Huttunen at (701)746-0331 or email sond@midconetwork.com.

Saturday, January 14
The monthly Valley City Bluegrass Jam session will be held from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. at the Barnes County Museum, 315 Central Ave N, Valley City.  The jam is acoustic only, featuring traditional bluegrass instruments and is free and open to the public.  Sponsors are the Barnes County Museum and the Bluegrass Association of North Dakota.  Questions may be referred to John Andrus at 701-762-4891.
The B.A.N.D. board of directors will meet at 11 a.m. at the Broken Spoke Restaurant in Valley City.   All B.A.N.D members are welcome to attend board meetings.

Sunday, January 15
Public Open Roller Skating Sponsored by the Optimist Club will be running Sundays through April at the Rec Center from 6-8 p.m.

Ice Skating open to the public Sundays running through March, Sunday nights from 6-8 p.m. at the Youth Sports Complex.

Monday, January 16
No School - Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Government offices closed.

Tuesday, January 17
The 52nd annual Minnesota Twins Winter Caravan will stop in Valley City with a community lunch from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Tuesday at Trestles at the Valley City Town & Country Club. Twins attending will include manager Ron Gardenhire, pitchers Glen Perkins and Brian Duensing, hitting coach Joe Vavra and broadcaster Cory Provus. The lunch will include a hot dog, chips, and a drink for $5, as well as a question and answer session and prizes.

Valley City Chamber of Commerce presents Business After Hours, The Legacy Place, 5-7 p.m.

Wednesday, January 18
Story hour at the Valley City-Barnes County Public Library from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. features Pastor Emmy Isaacson.
Mercy Hospital nurses will meet at Roby's at noon.

Thursday, January 19
Dinner entertainment at the Barnes County Senior Center will be local musician Cynthia Berget, 5:30 p.m.

The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 14 presents Valley City State University professor Anthony Dutton with “Tell Me What You Eat and I’ll Tell You Who You Are” at 7 p.m. at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum.

Saturday, January 21
29th Annual Ice Fishing Derby at Sibley, noon-3 p.m.  Prize money of $2,400 guaranteed. First, second and third place Perch, Walleye and Northern will win cash/prizes. Register at Sibley from 9 a.m.-noon. Entry fees $10 per person per hole (limit 4). Entry ticket drawing of 1st - $300,   2nd place - $200, and 3rd - $100. The 5th,7th,9th, 11th, and 13th fish registered will receive an ice fishing rod & reel combo.

"Living Up in a Down World" Dr. Bob is a certified suicide specialist, state licensed therapist, radio-show host, author, humorist, and is a nationally certified marriage and family therapist who speaks boldly and truthfully to the topics of depression and suicide. 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Vangstad Auditorium.

Monday, January 23
Traci and Spencer Hoveskeland: Classics and Pops – an 18 year marriage – a touch of humor – are blended together for an evening of good music, humor and fun!  The only bass and cello duo show in the world. The second concert of the 2011-2012 concert season presented by the Valley City Area Concert Association takes place 7:30 p.m. at Vangstad Auditorium.The husband and wife team will play a concert of classics and pops on their double bass and cello, blended together with a large portion of humor and fun.
 
Tuesday, January 24
Election Day: Valley City Recall Election for Mayor and City Commissioner positions, polls will be open at City Hall from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Absentee ballots are available at City Hall prior to the election.

The Rotary Club hosts its annual Pancake Supper, VFW, 5-7 p.m.

Wednesday, January 25
Story hour at the Valley City-Barnes County Public Library from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. features Monkey Shines.

VCSU Garage Bands-Garage Bands will perform for students during Business Day from 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. in Froemke Auditorium, VCSU Campus.

Hospice of the Red River Valley holds its open house 4-6 p.m. with ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m., located at 1240 West Main. The public is invited to stop in any time from 4 - 6 p.m. to enjoy refreshments, register to win a door prize and visit with Hospice staff members.

Thursday, January 26
Dance to the "Country Lads" from 1:30-4 p.m. at the Valley City Senior Center.

Valley City Chamber of Commerce presents Business After Hours at Professional Eyecare Center's new location in the Straus Mall, 5-7 p.m.

Saturday, January 28
The 2012 Horse Arena Banquet and auction in Fort Ransom takes place.

Sunday, January 29

Wednesday, February 1
Story hour at the Valley City-Barnes County Public Library from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. features Heart Buddies - Andrea Winter.

Saturday, February 4:
1st Annual Valley City Winter Festival presented by the Chamber of Commerce will feature:
10 a.m—Noon: Free Family Swim at the VCSU Indoor Pool

10 a.m.--1 p.m.: French Cooking School with Kristi Kracht! Learn how to prepare a 6 course French meal called “Cuisine of the Rose” at the FACS room at VCHS, pre-registration required, $20 per person and a minimum of 6 people needed to hold the class.

11 a.m.—2 p.m.: Family Burger Specials at the VFW and the Valley City Eagles Club.

1-4 p.m.: Winter Carnival at the VCPR with kids games and prizes, inflatable bounce and inflatable giant slide, caricature artist and face painting artist and lots of fun for the kids! $5/per.

4-6 p.m.: Free ice skating at the YSC with canned good item! The outdoor rink at Pioneer Park will also be open with the warming house available.

5-7 p.m.: Tour of Beer—A tasting experience at Trestles at the Country Club. $10 per person and will include many types of hot wings to try as well.

6:30 p.m.—8:30 p.m.: Free Family Movie Night at the HAC Gym—bring lawn chairs and sleeping bags if you wish or try the bleachers! Pop & popcorn will be available for a small fee.

Sunday, February 5:
1st Annual Valley City Winter Festival presented by the Chamber of Commerce, events continue with:
1—4 p.m.: Free Fun at Chautauqua Park—family Snow Sculpture Contest (winning sculpture will win $100 in Chamber Bucks),hot chocolate and goodies inside Dacotah Pavilion, Kiddie Train Rides around the park, and groomed cross country ski trails within the park as well.

4—6 p.m.: Free Ice Skating at the YSC with canned good item! The outdoor rink at Pioneer Park will also be open with the warming house available.

6—8 p.m.: Optimist Club Roller Skating at the VCPR $4/person.
