Twisters' Fisher Taking Helm of HS Gymnastics

November 1, 2012

In the past, high school gymnasts have generally had to deal with two sets of coaches — one for the high school season and one for the competitive season.
But starting with the upcoming season, the two coaching staffs will be nearly the same.
The Valley City School Board held a special meeting Thursday afternoon, where they accepted the resignation of VCHS head coach Carina Roehrich and approved hiring Dave Fisher, an assistant coach for the Valley Twisters gymnastics club, to fill the position.
Fisher is the husband of Twisters' head coach/director Suzanne Fisher, who was approved as the assistant coach for the Hi-Liners.
"I'm very excited about having them," school board president Joyce Braunagel said. "I think it will bring a lot of consistency to the program having the same coaches working with them (all year.)"
The coaching changes were the only items on the agenda for the meeting, which lasted only a few minutes. Neither the Fishers nor Roehrich attended.
The hire is contingent on a background check that Koppelman said has been started.
The school board also commended Roehrich and assistant Barb Bjorum for the work they did in two years leading the program.
"We certainly want to thank Carina for the nice job she's done with the program and with the kids," Koppelman said.
School board vice president Mike Callahan was pleased with using Twisters coaches for the school program.
"Hopefully things will move forward with the relationship between the Twisters and Valley City High School and they'll both just work together and enhance the overall gymnastics in Valley City," Callahan said.
