"Trunk or Treat?" Kids Trade Doorbells for Trunks

October 25, 2012

Instead of walking door-to-door, ringing doorbells, area kids will have the opportunity to walk from car-to-car, looking at trunks in this year's trunk-or-treat.
Trunk-or-treat, held annually at the Nazarene Church in Valley City, is a "fun and safe event for the whole family," the Rev. JoAnn Stack said.
The event will be held Oct. 31 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the church.
Members of the Nazarene Church will decorate the trunks of their vehicles and hand out treats to kids. The free event is open to children of all ages and their families.
The trunks are usually decorated in themes. Stack said last year, her theme was a trailer decorated in a Narnia theme, and a football theme took home the winning trophy.
"We have a friendly competition with a traveling trophy for the best decorated trunk," Stack said.
Trunk or treat has been held annually for five years as a way to provide a safe family environment for children on Halloween. Last year, Stack said they had nearly 400 kids go through, and this year they're planning for 500.
"Every year it seems to grow," she said.
Stack said trunk-or-treating has become a popular event among churches throughout the nation.
"We just have a lot of fun," Stack said. "The kids seem to really enjoy it."
There will be an inflatable game and music playing along with hot apple cider.
Stack encourages participants to wear costumes.
