Three Fires in One Hour Tuesday

April 23, 2014

The Valley City Fire Department received three fire calls Tuesday – all within 45 minutes.

The first call, which came in just after noon, was a corn field fire near the Peak exit off I-94. The fire was in a harvested field and spread slowly, according to Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath, but firefighters had a hard time maneuvering trucks in the field, which made fighting the fire difficult, he said.

While crews were busy at the Peak fire, they were called to a grass fire near Martin's Landing, north of Lake Ashtabula.

That fire was dangerously close to a farmstead, according to Valley City firefighter Lance Coit, but firefighters were able to protect it.

The Sanborn Fire Department provided assistance for the Martin's Landing fire since part of the VCFD were still fighting the Peak fire.

The third fire was a vehicle accident near Tower City which was passed to the Tower City Fire Department.
