Scientifically known as parhelion, but often called sun dogs or ice halos, many area residents spotted this ring of light around the sun over Valley City Wednesday morning. The atmospheric phenomenon creates bright spots of light in the sky, often on a luminous ring or halo. They're usually made by the refraction of light from ice crystals in the air during very cold weather.
