Students at Jefferson spent Friday on the field
Screams and laughs echoed at Hanna Field as students in grades K-3 enjoyed a “Survivor”-themed field day at Jefferson Elementary School on Friday.
Students competed with their classmates in a variety of activities at the first annual Jefferson Elementary “Survivor” Field Day on Friday.
The all-day event, which was organized by the PTO and the Physical Education Department to raise funds, promoted fun, outdoor exercise.
“We are trying to come up with something that is simple and profitable, while supporting the school’s commitment to living a healthy lifestyle,” was written in a school newsletter.
Eileen Maresh explained that the money raised would benefit the music department and playground among other things.
The warm and breezy “Survivor” field day consisted of a variety of activities, and students in winning classes were awarded ribbons. The activities, including games, crafts and a basic training session, ran from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants enjoyed a hot dog lunch break, too.
Students were also able to participate in a unique bingo game. “This is not a game of chance. It is just a way for tracking donations,” the school explained in the newsletter.
Students and their parents were asked to find family, friends and neighbors to sponsor them for field day. Donation amounts ranged from 50 cents to $5. For each bingo that a student got, they received a ticket for the prize drawings. Prizes were donated by community businesses.
Students who had a “blackout” bingo with all spaces filled, received 12 tickets for smaller prize drawings and one special ticket to put in a drawing for bigger prizes, such as a family swim pass for the pool and a bicycle.
Misti Kauffman who is from the PTO helped coordinate this event with Sherith Dawes and Mandi Adams. “We’ve had an overwhelming response from community businesses,” Kauffman said.
“It’s a great day had by all,” said Jill Taylor, performance strategist at Jefferson Elementary who also helped with balloon launching event, Ready to Launch.
