St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Valley City will be hosting a free indoor concert by the Christian band Koiné on Monday at 7 p.m. Prior to the concert, St. Paul’s will have a family activity night held outside on the church property from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. There will be a variety of games and activities for children of all ages.
The church will also serve hot dogs, pop, water, chips and cotton candy for a low price.
The Rev. Matthew Sprunger said, “A couple of us had this idea that we wanted to do something like this and some of us were familiar with the band, which is out of one of our churches in Milwaukee, so we invited them to come out and do a concert here.”
Koine is a church band based out of Milwaukee, Wisc. They began in 2003 at St. Marcus Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Koiné tours around the country, playing at nearly 200 events each year at various venues including churches, community festivals, grade schools, high schools and colleges, said the church.
They have produced five studio albums and have a repertoire of over 250 hymns and liturgical pieces. This is a full-time ministry for the members of the group, and is supported almost entirely by the generosity of people who attend their events.
Koiné is a Greek word meaning “common.” The band members describe themselves as common people who play common music that many people enjoy.
Brian Davison, vocalist for the group, said they are known for taking old hymns from the Christian church and playing them in a more modern way.
“People can hear the songs in a whole new way,” Davison said. Some have even told the group that when they first heard Koiné’s version of a particular song, it was like they had heard it for the first time.
Davison said their music is enjoyed by the young and old alike. He said that they will invite kids up to sing along to some of their songs.
In case of inclement weather of extreme heat, food and family activities will be held indoors. The event is open to the public and all ages are welcome to attend.
