St. Kate’s Holiday Concert Set for Thurs.

November 27, 2012

St. Catherine’s Christmas Concert is a traditional way that people in Valley City start the holiday season, according to Christopher Redfearn, Director of Choral Activities at Valley City State University.

The free concert will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Valley City.

“As soon as you hit December, everybody’s schedule just becomes very crazy,” Redfearn said. “We like putting this concert early in the season so that people can get into the holiday spirit.”

The concert will feature an eclectic variety of holiday music, including traditional carols like Away in the Manager but also pieces from across the world, including a piece in Russian and several in Latin.

There’s also some Christmas comedy pieces thrown in, Redfearn said.

“The brass group will be doing some carol arrangements as well. People just love to hear brass choirs at Christmas. It’s just kind of fun,” Redfearn said.

“This concert will really be a true holiday concert,” he said. “In the past it’s been a mixture of some holiday music and some not holiday music, but this year it will be all holiday-themed — both sacred and secular.”

Redfearn said he and his students are excited to bring back the concert for the 13th year. This is Redfearn’s first year directing the concert because he just started at VCSU in the fall.

“We just came off of our fall performance tour to the Bismarck area. We performed at high schools there, and performed a concert at a church there on Monday evening,” Redfearn said. “Now we’re bringing that show basically back to Valley City.”

The concert will feature not only the choirs but the quantum brass quintet, which is the university’s student brass ensemble.

“They will be joining us on a couple numbers,” Redfearn said.

The concert choir and university seniors, which is a chamber orchestra group, which will be doing works that fit their size.

“One of the pieces that we’re doing includes the organ and the brass and the choir. It’s very big, and the music for the chamber group is a little bit more intimate,” Redfearn said.

“It’s a great start to anybody’s holiday season,” Redfearn said.
