Sports Digest: Moore gains All-American status in two events, VCSU baseball, Class B girls regional tourneys to start

Moore named All-American
The Valley City State University track and field team crowned an All-American at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships, which took place over the weekend at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Freshman Darien Moore took fifth place in the weight throw event, placing him as an All American. He had a recorded distance of 18.87 meters in the finals, which finished him two centimeters behind the fourth place finisher.
Moore also gained All American status in the shot put. He finished seventh in the event with a final distance of 16.34 meters. The sixth place finisher at the event had a distance of 16.52 meters.
Wayne Englehard finished 14th in the preliminaries of the 800 meter run, finishing with a time of 1:59.16, but did not advance to finals.

Send-off Monday for VCSU women
The Valley City State University womens basketball team will leave Monday for the NAIA Division II Womens Basketball National Championship Tournament and the public is invited to join in the send-off.
The team will leave from the W. E. Osmon Fieldhouse at 5 p.m, today for Sioux City, Iowa, and students, faculty, staff and Viking fans of all ages are encouraged to stop by “The Bubble” to send the Vikings off on a high note.
National Tournament t-shirts will be available and on-sale for $10.

VCSU split a four game series over the weekend at Midland University in Fremont, Neb. The Vikings rallied on Sunday to win both games of the double header to earn the split. Leading the way for VCSU was junior Ronnie Blagg, who turned in his second strong performance of the season. Blagg pitched a complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts, no walks, and allowed only four hits in the game. Offensively, senior Kyle Skinner hit .462 (6-13) for the weekend with a home run, a double, and three RBI in the four games.

Class B girls regionals set to start
Local high schools will be tipping off in Class B regional play tonight.
The Maple Valley High School girls basketball team will be at the Region 1 tournament in Lisbon and the Barnes County North girls are at the Region 3 tournament in Napoleon.
The Raiders open the tournament against Milnor at 3 p.m. and the Bison will take on Napoleon at about 4:30 p.m..
In both tournaments, a loss tonight will end the season, but a win will guarantee games until Wednesday. Only the regional champion advances to state.
