The Sheyenne River Valley Chapter of the North Country Trail Association is hosting a morning hike to the Mineral Springs waterfall in the Sheyenne State Forest on Saturday, May 5, and they’d like to invite you along.
President Deb Koepplin welcomed anyone who would like a few hours of outdoor activity on the easy-to-moderate trail to meet in the Rosebud Visitor’s Center parking lot at 9 a.m. to carpool, or meet at the Sheyenne State Forest trailhead at 10 a.m.
The annual hiking excursion is usually well-attended, according to Koepplin.
“The first one of the year has always been our best turnout, maybe 30 people,” she said. “We’ve had quite a bit of interest in it. People come from all over for it, not just from Valley City.”
Koepplin advised that participants bring a sack lunch and some water, and that they should expect to hike for about three hours on the 4.4-mile round-trip, which winds through scenic grasslands and riparian areas.
“I will probably be the guide, and our ultimate goal is to get to the waterfall at the end of the trail,” said Koepplin. “I was out there back in April and it was a bit muddy, but it’s going to be drier and nicer when there’s leaves on trees.”
The hike kicks off a season of planned outings for the club, including a National Trails Day hiking and canoe excursion at Fort Ransom State Park on June 2, a North Country Trail hike and camp-out in July, and a National Public Lands Day hike in September.
