VCHS Freshmen 44, Lisbon 6
The Valley City High School freshman football team beat Lisbon 44-6 in its home opener Thursday.
The team quickly got on the board after the run game set up a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Eggermont to Ethan Zeltinger. Lucas Jury then ran the ball in for a two-point conversion.
Valley City finished the first half with two touchdown runs by Jury, one for 52 yards and the other for 65. Eggermont completed passes on both two-point conversions. Zeltinger and John Halgrimson caught the two-pointers.
Similar to the first half, Valley City's ground game paved the way to success in the second half, with a bit of help from Eggermont, who made a key pass to Brandon Pritchett on 3rd and long that helped keep the opening drive going.
Defensively the Hi-Liners came up big and played well in all positions. Cody Halverson made a big hit early in the game on a Lisbon reverse that drew a roar from the crowd.  Other key plays on defense came from Jury, who had an interception for a touchdown, and Noah Kvilvang, who had a tipped pass on a third down pass play. The defensive pressure applied by lineman Garrett Berg and linebackers Kory Johnson and Jordan Magnuson also kept Lisbon at bay.
The freshmen continue their season at home Sept. 13 against Wahpeton.
