Robert Hefty, age 80, of Valley City, ND died Saturday, February 23, 2013 at his home after a long illness. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 2nd at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held on hour before the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery near Mandan, ND in the spring.
Robert Theodore Hefty was born February 27, 1932 at Fargo, North Dakota to Roy and Selma (Anderson) Hefty, He was raised in Walcott and Kindred, North Dakota before moving to Valley City in 1941. He graduated from College High School in 1950 and started college that fall at Valley City State Teachers College, as well working at the Valley City Times Record. In April 1952, he enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean War where he learned his trade as an electrician while serving two combat tours aboard the battleship USS Missouri. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy in April 1956.
He then returned to Valley City and worked for the Valley City Municipal Utilities (now Valley City Public Works) as a lineman and electrician.
In June 1957, he married Sonja Lillian Overbo of Valley City, where they made their home and raised two sons. Robert continued to work for the Valley City Municipal Utilities until July 1993 when a debilitating illness prematurely ended his career.
Robert was an avid outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and all the time he could at the family lake cabin on Lake Ashtabula.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years and caretaker Sonja of Valley City, and sons Rocky (LaVal Eberhart) of Bismarck, ND and Alan of Jamestown, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Norman, and sister Irma.
The family wishes memorials to either the Valley City "Shop with a Cop" or "Sheyenne Valley Friends of Animals”.
