Reverend DuBois T. Smith

DuBois T. Smith (February 17, 1931 – May 13, 2013)
The Reverend DuBois T. Smith died Monday evening, May 13, 2013 at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City, ND after a wonderful life. He was 82 years old.
Reverend Smith was born in Brooklyn, NY on February 17, 1931, the youngest child of Edward H.L. Smith and Dorothy Miller Smith. He spent most of his life on his family’s farm in Nissequoque, NY part of the township of Smithtown, NY that was founded by his maternal and paternal ancestor Richard Smythe in the 1600’s.
Reverend Smith was a man who lived life dedicated to his two vocations – the land and his faith. For many years, beginning at age 16, he was a farmer, and later a John Deere Farm Equipment dealer for almost twenty years. And then when he was 60, he went back to school to become a Deacon in the United Methodist Church, where he served as minister to two churches in New York State until his retirement at age 70.
After his daughter, The Reverend Dorothy Miller Borden was married in 2006, he came to live with her and her husband until his health began to fail more deeply, and he began residing at the Care Center in 2007.
Reverend Smith was predeceased by his brothers, Richard “RB” Smith, Edward H.L. Smith, William Wickham Mills Smith and his sisters Garetta Lyons and Mary Augusta Hoff. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife Frances Noble Smith and a son DuBois T. Smith II. He is survived by his daughter, Reverend Dorothy Miller Borden, her husband Reverend Carleton H. Borden who currently live in New Hanover, PA with their two children, George and Theodore Borden.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to either the Falkner Swamp Reformed Church United Church of Christ – 2077 Swamp Pike, Gilbertsville, PA 19525 or the Saint James Episcopal Church – 490  North Country Road, Saint James, Long Island, NY 11780. The funeral service and burial for Reverend Smith will be at his home church – Saint James Episcopal Church – 490 North Country Road, Saint James, NY 11780 on Long Island on Saturday, June 15th 2013 at 11 am (Eastern Standard Time).  Funeral arrangements by the Lerud Schuldt Funeral Home of Valley City, ND.
