Children and many adults may have Monday off for the Memorial Day holiday, but Valley City and Barnes County will be filled with events recognizing the contribution of service people.
Valley City will have its annual Memorial Day parade, and memorial services will be conducted at cemeteries in and near Valley City and around Barnes County.
Scott Crump, Barnes County Veterans Service Officer, said Thursday memorial services will be conducted at the following cemeteries:
*8 a.m. Hillside Cemetery â€“ Eagles Auxiliary
*8:15 a.m.St. Catherine Cemetery â€“ American Legion Auxiliary
*8:45 a.m.Oriska Cemetery â€“ Auxiliary
*9 a.m.St.Bernard Cemetery â€“ American Auxiliary
*9:30 a.m.Memory Gardens â€“ Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary
*9:45 a.m.Woodbine Cemetery â€“ Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary
At 10:30 a.m.,with gathering started at 10 a.m., there will be a parade down Valley City's Central Avenue. There will be no political entries or candy throwing during the parade. The parade will start by the Sheyenne Care Center. If you have questions about the parade call James Riden at 845-1586.
Immediately following the parade, or about 11 a.m., there will be a program at the VFW .
Following the Program there will be a Memorial Service in the Veterans Memorial Park with the Valley City Post No. 2764 V.F.W Auxiliary, VFW Honor Guard and AMVETS Color Guard
There will also be a memorial service at the City Park Footbridge, a tribute to those who served on the seas with the Valley City Post No. AMVETS Auxiliary, VFW Honor Guard and AMVETS Guard
After all the activities, a lunch, with a free-will offering requested, will be served at the VFW.
All activities are open to the public.
Eckelson-Sanborn American Legion and Auxiliary Post 202 will hold its 65th annual Memorial Day Program on Monday at the Sacred Heart Church in Sanborn, starting at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services and dinner to follow at the Sanborn Community Center. Memorial Day Services will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m., in the Fingal City Hall, with a luncheon to follow the service.
Leal Memorial Day Color Guard will appear at the Leal Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. on Monday. Following the program will be a potluck meal at the Leal Fire Hall. Utensils and drinks will be provided.
Buffalo plans for Memorial Day are to have a program by the American Legion No. 10 Auxiliary 9 a.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery, a memorial service 10 a.m. at the Buffalo Cemetery, a program at the Buffalo Community Center at 11 a.m. and a free-will offering meal by the auxiliary at noon inside the community center.
Summer visiting hours begin at the Midland Continental Depot Transportation Museum Featuring Peggy Lee in Wimbledon. Open daily from 1 to 4 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day. Valley City School District and St. Catherineâ€™s schools will not have school in honor of the Memorial Day holiday. School will resume on Tuesday, May 27, at regular times.
