Pure Craziness

July 26, 2012

Visitors to Valley City’s Crazy Day participated in a watermelon eating contest outside of Dutton’s Valley Gallery.

Valley City’s downtown district was hopping Wednesday as locals and visitors swarmed the streets in search of good sales and food. Kids played in bounce houses, shoppers visited outdoor stands and many enjoyed a buffalo burger.

Crazy Day is an annual street fair held every year in July hosted by the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce. Local businesses offer discounts on selected items and some sell food and items as fundraisers.

Some businesses even hold fun contests, such as the watermelon eating contest that Dutton’s Valley Gallery holds every year.

Combining fun and fundraising, Valley City State University’s V-500 scholarship program and Edward Jones Investment sponsored a dunk tank, where visitors could throw a ball at a target to dunk someone in a bucket of water. The money raised will go directly to V-500 scholarships.

Valley City’s Veteran of Foreign Wars club sponsored a bingo game at 2 p.m., and Bank Forward sold ice cream floats as a Relay for Life fundraiser.

People had many reasons to come out to Crazy Day, but neighbors Becky Schroeder and Helen Metcalf, both of Valley City, have been attending Crazy Day for years for a chance to catch up with people they don’t see often and take advantage of some good sales.

Schroeder said she usually gets a buffalo burger served by the Valley City Lion’s Club. She also did some early Christmas shopping at some of the store’s sidewalk sales. Schroeder was excited because she won a leather chair from a contest at Valley Officeworks.

Metcalf likes to buy books and flowers and enjoyed catching up with Schroeder, saying that even though they’re neighbors, they don’t get much time to visit.
