Pump, Dig, Then Hope

Brian Mindt is at a loss of how to even begin cleaning up the basement. He's got to work as much as possible just to pay for the losses, he said, and then find the time to literally dig out some spots.

Following a Thursday evening torrential rainstorm, scattered homes and apartments in Valley City Friday looked to be holding moving sales as couches, beds, throw rugs and much else were placed under the blue sky in the sun to dry, while hoses snaked along lawns and roads dispersing basement water into the streets. Some downtown business spent the morning pumping out, too. But down at the Iron Stallion, owner Brian Mindt was doleful that he would ever be dry.
In some places in the basement there's a foot of sand and gravel. The water was nearly three feet deep, and that was with several sump pumps running full-out.
