Food that was planned for but never used at the canceled Wing and Wheels AirShow will be used at a memorial service for Robert Odegaard of Kindred, who died during a practice run Friday at the Barnes County Muncipal Airport.
The Fly In: Odegaard Pancakes event will take place at the Fargo Air Museum from 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Guests will be served the pancakes that were scheduled to be served Sunday during a fundraising breakfast at the airshow, said Toby McPherson, co-director of the airshow along with Barnes County Airport Authority clerk Lori Jury.
“The food will be used,” McPherson said.
Breakfast will be served by members of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter No. 317, the Fargo chapter of the organization.
McPherson said Monday there will be a prayer service 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Maurice’s Catholic Church in Kindred, led by pilots sharing portions of the service.
At 2 p.m. Wednesday, McPherson said, will be the funeral at Odegaard’s hometown in Kindred followed by burial and a flyover and missing man flyby by regional pilots.
Also Wednesday will be a special program celebrating the life of Bob Odegaard at the Fargo Air Museum following services in Kindred.
The museum describes the event as an “Ode to the Odegaard,” including “blue jeans, banjo and Bob stories.” A light supper will be served at the program.
McPherson said the memorial service will be open to all that want to attend.
McPherson, a long-time pilot himself, said of Odegaard, “We were best friends – I’ve lost two of my mentors/teachers in five years.”
Fran Brummund, executive director of the Fargo Air Museum, said Monday, “Odegaard was revered by many around the U.S. And the world. His first love was his wife, followed by his friends and flying. President George Bush (the first president Bush) even spoke with him two weeks ago.
“Robert and his family touched many, many lives. We are appreciative of the efforts by the airport authority and the people of Valley City who came together to put together a beautiful airshow. Bob did airshows all over the country. It’s so hard for Valley City to work so hard and have this end so tragically.”
The museum is located at 1609 19th Ave. N. in Fargo.
