Post 60 Holds off Harvey for State Seed

July 25, 2014

Chase Carpenter batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and pitched 2.1 relief innings for a hit, a walk and four strikeouts in Thursday’s 6-5 Regional Tournament-opening defeat of Harvey that guaranteed Post 60 a State Tournament spot. Carpenter also went 1-for-3 with a run in Thursday’s 10-2 loss to Wahpeton.

Up 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Harvey Post 28’s Shawn Kourajian on second and Trevor Schimke on third in Thursday’s Class A East Regional opener, Chase Carpenter struck out Brian Fike on three straight pitches for the save, a matchup with top seed Wahpeton and a guaranteed spot in July 30’s State Tournament in Wahpeton, N.D.

“We rolled in like conquistadors,” said Legion Post 60 assistant coach Erick Counts of Post 60’s marauding spirit coming into Regionals. “[Valley City head coach Kyle] Roelfsema shaved his mustache like a conquistador.”

Valley City led 4-0 on six Harvey errors through two innings but could not put the game away until the final out.

Wahpeton took the subsequent showdown, 10-2, but State seedings are still to be determined.

No. 2 Grafton fell 10-4 to No. 3 Casselton on Thursday, then eliminated No. 4 Harvey, 7-5, in consolation.

Wahpeton faces Casselton at 11 a.m. Friday, and Valley City takes on Grafton at 1:30 p.m., broadcasted on 1490 AM. All four remaining teams advance to State.
