Less than 24 hours before the Wings and Wheels Air Show was scheduled to start in Valley City, tragedy struck as Bob Odegaard, who was scheduled to perform in the air show was killed when the plane he was flying crashed during a practice run.
Odegaard, 66, of Kinded, N.D. was practicing for the air show Friday when “something went terribly wrong,” at approximately 5:55 p.m., Sgt. Troy Hischer of the North Dakota Highway Patrol said Friday during a press conference.
Odegaard was practicing a barrel roll in his 1945 Super Corsair airplane at the Barnes County Municipal Airport, north of Valley City. The cause of the crash remains unknown, and the Federal Aviation Administration has taken over the investigation.
Dennis Helland, chairman of the Barnes County Airport Authority, said Odegaard was very well known in the aviation community across the state and nation.
The airshow, which was set to begin at 3 p.m. Saturday, was cancelled because of the crash. Helland said a couple other airplanes were damaged in the crash and those scheduled to perform Saturday wouldn’t want to fly.
Odegaard was a mentor to Tim McPhearson, of Tall Towers Aviation in Page, N.D. for over 35 years. McPhearson was co-chair of the air show.
