PHOTOS: Herman Stern Marker Dedication

The historical marker in memory of former Valley City businessman Herman Stern was officially dedicated on Saturday, Oct. 15.

The marker commemorates the life and work of Stern, a German Jewish emigrant who moved to North Dakota in 1903 at the at the age of 16 and began a successful business career in Carrington, Casselton and later Valley City.

Stern is credited with rescuing 125 Jews from Nazi Germany.

The historical marker is cosponsored by the Barnes County Historical Society and the Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation. It was entered in the North Dakota Historical Marker Register as marker No. 1 in 2016.
