Nothin' But a No. 4 Seed Thang: Post 60 Beats Watford City, Reaches State Quarterfinals

August 1, 2014

East No. 4 seed Legion Post 60, pictured celebrating Chase Carpenter’s fifth-inning leadoff home run in Wednesday’s 10-8 defeat of West No. 1 Beulah, took down West No. 3 Watford City, 7-4, on Thursday for their second upset in as many Class A State Tournament games.

Upsets are unexpected for an East No. 4 seed, but Legion Post 60’s filling that demand.

Valley City, on the roll that head coach Kyle Roelfsema envisioned entering Regionals in Grafton, N.D., took down a second paper giant in as many days on Thursday at the Class A State Tournament in Wahpeton, N.D.

A day after overthrowing West No. 1 Beulah, 10-8, despite trailing 7-3 through a frame, Post 60 put up five runs in Thursday’s first to beat West No. 3 Watford City, 7-4.

Valley City, who defeated Harvey, 6-5, a week prior to make their State campaign possible, faces East No. 1 Wahpeton, who handed Valley City the fourth seed with July 24’s 10-2 Regional defeat, in Friday’s 7 p.m. quarterfinal, broadcasted on 1490 AM KOVC and online at

Beulah duels East No. 3 Casselton in a 1 p.m. elimination game before West No. 4 Velva battles Watford City at 4 p.m.

Legion led 7-2 through four and spotted Watford City a run in the fifth and seventh, but Jesse Johnson and the defense held.

Ben Baasch batted 2-of-4 with a run and an RBI, Dalton Ondracek 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks, Jake Miller 1-for-2 for two runs, an RBI and two walks, Chase Carpenter 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Johnson 1-for-4, Spencer Meyer 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Masyn Olsen 1-for-3. Austen Meyer scored and drew a walk. Austin Berg drew a walk.

Johnson pitched all seven innings on eight hits, three of four runs allowed, two walks and eight strikeouts.

Post 60 came up with eight hits and two errors, Watford City eight hits and three gaffes.
