Nadine VanDyke has been named 2012 Mercy Hospital Auxilian-of-the-Year by fellow volunteers at the Valley City Hospital, said auxiliary Vice President Diane Heuser.
The award was presented by Donna Nelson, 2011 Mercy Hospital Auxilian-of-the-Year, Heuser said.
Heuser said the award was only created a few years ago, a suggestion of her own.
The wife of hospital administrator Keith Heuser, Heuser said, âWhere we were before (coming to Mercy), they always had this type of thing (awards for volunteers).â
Heuser said the auxilian award is âbased on the number of volunteer hours. We look at names based on the number of (volunteer) hours, we pick like five people for the number of hours, and auxiliary members choose the winner.â
VanDyke has been auxiliary president for the past seven years, coordinating the program, attending meetings in Jamestown and Bismarck, proposes fundraising events, âand is there for every bake sale, book sale and jewelry sale.â
VanDyke has been an auxiliary member and volunteer at the hospital since 2002.
Although as auxiliary president VanDyke is not required to volunteer at the hospital, Heuser said, âNadine truly goes above and beyond the call of duty,â often putting in volunteer hours at the hospital gift shop.
Normally the award is given out at the hospitalâs Christmas brunch each year in December. VanDyke was out of town during this yearâs brunch, so she received her award separately.
âIâm so glad this year people did recognize Nadine,â Heuser said.
Heuser read a comment from VanDyke at this yearâs brunch. VanDykeâs statement said, âThere are so many (volunteers) that are so deserving, and it feels so good to be honored.â
Said Heuser, âItâs a great way to recognize the time and effort given by volunteers.â
Heuser said all Mercy Hospital volunteers are auxiliary members and the hospital would like to ignite some interest in volunteerism. âWe would love to have more people (women and men) in the hospital auxiliary. There are many more opportunities â greeters, courtesy cart â if we had more members.â
