Myrna Braunagel, 75, of Devils Lake, ND, passed away October 25, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society, Oakes, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Myrna Loy was born November 1, 1936 at Devils Lake, North Dakota to Lonnie and Dorothy (Nelson) Rhodes. She grew up and attended school in the Devils Lake area with her adopted parents, Vern and Hattie (Wolter) Dickinson. Myrna was a creative person, and during her high school years she enjoyed working as a florist. After graduating from high school, Myrna attended Concordia College, Moorhead, MN. She was united in marriage to L.A. “Tony” Braunagel on August 4, 1957 at Devils Lakes, ND. They made their home and farmed near Devils Lake, where they raised their two children, Drew and Mindy.
Myrna returned to Concordia College. After earning her teaching degree, she was a kindergarten teacher for many years in Devils Lake. She also worked as a receptionist for the cable TV company and owned and operated her own boutique shop called the La Gallerie. In later years, Myrna enjoyed making her home in Key West, Florida, where she worked in retail stores and airline security. In 2008 she moved to Oakes to be closer to her daughter, and later became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society.
Myrna was a socialite, and was active in many organizations. She was a member of Eastern Star, and was Worthy Matron and held several other postions. Myrna was honored to receive the Grand Cross of Colors. She was also a member of Pioneer Daughters, Ramsey County Homemakers, Lake Ettes Homemakers, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, 3 bridge clubs, Mother Advisor for Rainbow Girls, and she was on the City Beautification Board and the Chautaugua Board of Directors.
Myrna loved drama and played several leading roles in the Fort Totten Little Theater, Fort Totten, ND, the Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center, Water Front Theater, and the Jan McCart Dinner Theater, all in Key West, Fl. She also sang in the Concordia Choir while attending college.
Myrna will be remembered for her laughter, giving gifts, and her love of children. She also loved traveling, painting, writing poetry, playing bridge, and acting and singing.
She is survived by her daughter, Mindy (Merle) Presler, Oakes, ND; a sister, Loretta Tobias, Chicago, IL; and five grandchildren, Lawrence Whitaker, Cooperstown, ND, Crystal Casorotti, Baton Rouge, LA, Shannon Kreklow, Ryan Braunagel, and Tyson Braunagel, all of Colorado Springs, CO. Myrna was preceded in death by both sets of parents, a son, Drew, and a sister, Maxine Torgerson.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service starting at 7:00 p.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes. Her funeral will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Oakes. A graveside service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Devils Lake Cemetery, Devils Lake, ND.
