Military recognition

April 16, 2012

April is the Month of the Military Child, and programs were held at Washington and Jefferson Elementary Schools Friday afternoon to recognize students and several faculty members who have parents, siblings, aunts uncles or cousins serving in the military.

Major Anna Wittrock of the local Army National Guard Unit, second from right, presents Jake Tangen with a “True Patriot Award” certificate for having a family member who is currently serving in the military. Jake’s brother is currently deployed in Afghanistan, and will be overseas until October.

Patriotic music and a slide show with photos of the family members were also part of the presentation.

Jake’s mother Leah Tangen, grandmother Betty Etzell and aunt Melody Hetland were also on hand to watch the presentation. “I was looking forward to this,” said Leah Tangen, “because I think these kids need to be recognized, and people need to know that there are military kids out there, even if it’s a sibling and not a parent.”
