Valley City State Track & Field opened the outdoor season at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Saturday, from which sophomore Jessica Meland emerged with a school-record, 12th-place Hammer Throw toss of 44.85m (147 feet, 2 inches) that beat her former teammate, Amber Volanti, who set the old record in 2012.
Meland wasn’t the only hammer thrower to have a great day: freshmen Mary Roscoe (29.79m; 97 feet, 9 inches) and Kate Roscoe (29.64m; 93 feet, 11 inches) find themselves on the Viking All-Time Performance List after respective sixth- and seventh-place finishes.
Sophomore Jenna Coghlan’s best javelin toss of 33.80m (110 feet, 11 inches) earned a sixth-place finish. Coghlan said she wishes she could have thrown further, but was pleased that she was still able to place, adding that she, “hopes to bounce back next week at NDSU.”
Leading the men was sophomore Malik Jackson with a second-place finish (34th overall) in his 4:19.42 1500m Run heat. Jackson also put down a 1:59.33 for 12th in the 800m Run.
The VCSU sprints crew pulled off a great race in the 4x100m relay for fourth place at 46.01, even after a poor first exchange. Freshman Niklas Ernst also picked up a fourth-place finish at 58.76 seconds in the 400m hurdles.
Next for VCSU are Saturday’s Dakota Duels at North Dakota State University.View more articles in:
