A malfunctioning carnival ride at the Red River Valley Fair in West Fargo sent a 6-year-old boy to the hospital.

Mother Brandee Godfrey tells WDAY-TV her son suffered bumps and bruises but is fine.

The Murphy Bros. ride is similar to a merry-go-round, with pretend motorcycles for children to ride. The motorcycles are fixed to a platform, but the one Godfrey's son was on Tuesday came loose. He fell about 2 feet, with the motorcycle landing on top of him.

Fair Association General Manager Bryan Schulz says safety is a priority for officials, and the injury is the first in the 8 ½ years he's been at the fair.

North Dakota doesn't require daily inspections of carnival rides. Instead, each ride is certified at the beginning of the season.
