Lucy Lockwood

Lucy Lockwood, age 79, of Valley City, ND, died Friday, January 10, 2014 at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 14th at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Lerud Schuldt Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday afternoon. A payer service will be held at 7:00 PM Monday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Catherine’s Catholic Cemetery in the Spring.
Lucy Mary O’Brien, the daughter of Joseph and Augusta (Mortenson) O’Brien, was born May 11, 1934 at the family farm near Eckelson, North Dakota. She grew to adulthood there, working hard on the farm along with the rest of her family. Lucy attended Island Lake School and graduated from St. Catherine’s School in 1952. She married Benjamin (Ben) Lockwood on May 9, 1957 at St. Catherine’s Church, Valley City. Ben and Lucy made their home in Valley City after several years at Litchville, ND. Five children were born into their union. Lucy worked as a receptionist for Dr. Muriel Wicks, DDS and prepared freight bills for a trucking company in the early years of their marriage. Lucy spent much of her life working in the restaurant trade, serving countless customers in her cheerful, efficient manner at the Hi-Liner Café, Post Specialties, and Hilltop Café. She was also later employed as a custodian at Valley City State University, taking many female students under her motherly wing. Following retirement, Lucy worked part-time at the Pizza Corner Factory and volunteered at the Nearly Nu Store. Both Lucy and Ben were active members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2764, volunteering with Saturday Hamburgers and the Cootie Steak Fry. She was also employed at the VFW Club, assisting with charitable gaming. Lucy was an avid softball player and bowler. She instilled the love of both games in others, serving as a coach and mentor for many years. She also enjoyed snowmobile trips to Minnesota, riding her bicycle, and visiting with people of all walks of life. Lucy entered the Sheyenne Care Center in December, 2007.
She is survived by her five children: Brenda (David) Moritz of Jamestown, Ann, Tom (Ramona), Tim (Diane), and Mike (Kathy), all of Valley City; six brothers: Joseph and James of Valley City, Louis (Marie), Devils Lake, ND, Dale (Carolyn), Gilbert, AZ, Dennis (Janet), Marion, IA, Lloyd, Westchester, IL; two sisters: Lillian (Edward) Moug, Omaha, AR and Mary Emke, Marshalltown, IA; sister-in-law Lillie O’Brien, Spokane, WA; eight grandchildren: Jessica Moritz, Levi (Kylie) Lockwood, Jebidiah (Nicole) Lockwood, Shane (Amanda) Anderson, Benjamin Lockwood, Ryan (Cassandra) Cunningham, Kurry (Greta) Delparte, Kyle Uecker; five great-grandchildren: Caleb Lockwood, Brandon Lockwood, Katherine Lockwood, VeronicaCunningham, and Keith Anderson.
Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers, one sister, a daughter-in-law, and a son-in-law.
