Loss clinches EDC seed for VCHS tennis

May 14, 2012

(Scott Schlaufman/Times-Record) Valley City High School’s Sara Gilbertson returns a shot during a match last month. The Hi-Liners lost at Fargo South Thursday in a match that helped decide seeding in the Eastern Dakota Conference tournament next week.

The Valley City High School tennis team clinched its seed in the Eastern Dakota Conference with a 6-3 loss at Fargo South Thursday.
The teams were playing in a match that decided the sixth and seventh seeds for the tournament, Valley City taking the latter.
“We will match up with West Fargo in the first round, with a potential rematch with South looming in the second round, which we are excited for,” Valley City coach Matt Nielson said.
The Hi-Liners only wins in the match came from Clarissa Olson at No. 2 singles, Sam Coit at No. 5 singles, and the No. 3 doubles team of Destiny Winkler and Jessica Gylden.
Nielson said many issues the team had were due to windy conditions in Fargo, which threw off some of the players.
“We were able see what happens on a bad wind day and how to overcome it,” he said. “We had a couple mental errors in the singles, but we talked it through and hopefully solved the problems heading into the post-season.”
In the No. 5 singles match, Sam Coit beat Jessica McNutt.
“She tells me that she doesn’t want a coach to talk to her on the courts and I told her I wouldn’t if she was winning,” Nielson said. “The results – I haven’t talked to her in three matches.”
He said that Olson beat Anna Lawley, who had beat her twice over the summer.
Winkler in Gylden’s match with McNutt and Rachel Aabye, Nielson said the girls struggled early but improved after getting criticism on their play.
“After our chat, they dominated the rest of the match,” Nielson said.
