Local Digest: Maple Valley and LMM basketball, VCSU players win awards
Maple Valley boys get weekend sweep
The Maple Valley boys basketball team had few problems offensively or defensively last weekend with home wins over Enderlin and North Sargent.
Thursday the Raiders beat Enderlin 60-39.
Maple Valley allowed only ten points in each of the first three quarters and had a 39-20 lead by halftime.
Ethen Preston led the Raiders with 16 points, including a 4-4 performance at the free-throw line, and was one of four players to score in double digits for the team.
Jordan Haseleu had 13 points, Ty Smith had 12, and Wade Steidl had 10, including the team’s only two 3-pointers.
Enderlin was led in scoring by Colton Haas, who had 16 points, including all of his team’s ten in the second quarter.
Saturday the Raiders beat North Sargent 56-41 in similar fashion.
Maple Valley allowed only eight points in the first quarter and held a 27-18 lead by halftime.
This time, Smith led the Raiders in scoring with 8 points, including eight two-pointers. Haseleu had 12 points.
North Sargent was led by Zach Oreviow with 14 points.
The wins put the Raiders at 7-1 this year.
The Maple Valley girls won their lone game over the weekend 41-40 at Richland and are 3-0 this year.
LMM girls get win against Central Prairie
The Litchville-Marion/Montpelier girls team beat Central Prairie 57-43 at home Friday.
Early on the rebels struggled to score points. Central Prairie had a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and held on to it 25-20 at halftime.
The Rebels came out strong in the third quarter and outscored Central Prairie 26-10 behind play from Cassie Fick, who had nine points in the quarter, and Tasha Piehl, who had six.
LMM led 46-35 going into the fourth quarter and held onto it to win.
Piehl led LMM with 20 points and Fick finished with 18. Noelle Moser led Central Prairie with 18 points.
LMM boys lose to Central Prairie
The Litchville-Marion/Montpelier boys lost 58-42 at home to Central Prairie Friday.
The game went back and forth and leads changed several times in a close first three quarters. By the end of the third quarter, LMM trailed 44-40,
In the fourth, the Rebels scored only two points, a basket from Dylan Thompson, while Central Prairie had 14.
Thompson led the Rebels with 16 points and Central Prairie’s Will Staloch led his team with 15.
VCSU duo named Players of the Week
Valley City State University basketball players Sekani Milligen and Katelyn Ralston, both juniors, were named Dakota Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Players of the Week Monday.
Milligen a junior guard from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida scored 27 points and grabbed two rebounds as he led the Vikings to a win against Johnson & Wales University in Denver. In the victory, he was 7 of 13 from the field (53.9 percent) including a 5-11 performance from the 3-point arc (45.5 percent) and was a perfect 8 of 8 from the free throw line.
Ralston combined for 32 points, eight rebounds, eight steals and one assist in the Vikings’ wins against Trinity Bible College and Johnson & Wales.
Additionally, Milligen was named the Association of Independent Institutions men’s Player of the Week. It is the second time this season Milligen has received the award.
Both teams got their 10th wins of the year Tuesday at Northern New Mexico College. The men won 84-73 and the women won 76-55
New Valley Twisters session starts
Session 3 of Valley Twisters gymnastics begins this week, and daily open gym from 9 a.m. to noon will take place Dec. 26 through Dec. 29.
The Valley Twisters will also have a New Year’s Eve sleep-over from 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve through 9 a.m. New Year’s Day. The event, which costs $35, is open to all ages. For more information, call the gym at (701) 845-2281.
