Legion Post 60 Ready for Regionals

Valley City Legion Post 60 carry the No. 3 seed into Thursday’s Grafton Regional Tournament after a 3-13 regular season campaign and look to hit their stride starting with an 11 a.m. debut against Harvey.

“There isn’t a team with better players position-by-position,” said Post 60 head coach Kyle Roelfsema of his squad intent on reducing mistakes in key moments that contributed to seven losses of three or fewer runs.

Thursday’s winner faces Wahpeton at 4 p.m. Thursday, the loser the Grafton-Casselton loser at 6:30 p.m Thursday.

Post 60 scored 4.75 runs per contest and gave up 12.1.

Chase Carpenter led all batters with a 26-for-46 (.565) campaign, four walks, 17 singles, six doubles, two triples, a homer, 13 runs and nine batted in.

Jake Miller batted 19-of-57 (.333) for six walks, 13 singles, six doubles, nine runs and seven RBIs.

Austen Meyer went 14-of-44 (.318) for four walks, 11 singles, two doubles, a triple, seven runs and brought seven home.

Jesse Johnson came up 19-of-60 (.317) for three walks, 15 singles, four doubles, six runs and freed 11 more.

Post 60 batted 134-for-483 (.277) with a .372 on-base percentage, 57 walks, 100 singles, 28 doubles, five triples, Carpenter’s dinger, 76 runs and 57 RBIs.

Johnson led the team with a 1.826 earned run average through 23 innings, a 1-2 record and a save in seven appearances against 23 hits, six of 17 runs earned, 18 walks, 31 strikeouts and three batters hit by pitch.

Austin Berg turned in a 3.684 ERA with 19 innings pitched in seven games and a 1-0 record against 30 hits, 10 of 24 earned runs, 16 walks, 19 strikeouts and a hit-by-pitch.

Masyn Olsen posted a 4.455 ERA through 11 innings, three games and an 0-1 record, 18 hits, seven of 16 runs earned, 11 walks, five hits and a hit-by-pitch.

Valley City registered a 6.509 team ERA through 114 innings, 20 games, a 3-10 standing and Johnson’s save against 186 hits, 193 runs, 106 of 193 runs earned, 110 walks, 133 strikeouts and 20 batters hit by pitch.

Miller’s .949 fielding percentage led Post 60 with 93 putouts against five errors. Alex Milender fielded a .931 with 54 putouts and four errors, Ben Baasch a .917 on 22 putouts and two errors.

Post 60 completed the regular season with an .826 fielding percentage on 338 putouts and 71 errors.
