Jimmies Outstreak Vikings
Jamestown volleyball (8-4) brought a four-game win streak to town against Valley City State (4-7), who were on a two-game win streak of their own, for the first North Star Athletic Conference clash between the rivals on Wednesday night.
Scoring streaks told the story of the back-and-forth match — seven-and-eight-point leads did not last long for either squad — but Jamestown took the match, 3-0 (25-21, 29-27, 25-19).
Valley City jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set to force a Jamestown timeout, but the Jimmies responded with a 7-6 run to force a Viking timeout and cut the deficit to 12-8. The score tied at 14-14 and 18-18 before the Jimmies took a 20-18 advantage and forced another Valley City timeout. Jamestown kept their feet on the gas and surged to take Set 1, 25-21.
Viking scores started quickly again with a 12-6 lead in Set 2 before the Jimmies tied the score at 16-16, 17-17 and 18-18. A three-point run put Valley City up 21-18 and drew a Jamestown timeout, but the resurgent Jimmies knotted it up again at 22 apiece. Ties stood at 24-24, 25-25, 26-26 and 27-27, but Jamestown scored the final two points and the Jimmies took a 2-0 set advantage.
Valley City a lead of only two points in Set 3 before Jamestown tied it at 4-4 and forced a Viking timeout with an 8-4 lead. The Jimmies could not shake the Vikings but managed a 19-12 lead, their longest of the night, Valley City drew within four points at 22-18, but a 3-1 Jamestown run sealed the 3-0 (25-21, 29-27, 25-19) sweep for Jamestown.
Aurissa Martens led the Vikings in kills with 11, Stephanie Miller in assists with 11, Emily Plowman in digs with 17, Martens and Jodi Wilde in blocks with two each.
Next for the Vikings (0-1 NSAA, 4-8 overall) is the Peru State Tournament (Peru, Neb.) against College of Saint Mary, Mount Marty College, Peru State and AIB, Sept. 13-14.
