Jeans For Teens

February 24, 2012

St. Catherine School---Valley City
Students in Mrs. Dawn Ihry’s fifth and sixth grade classroom recently completed a service project to help provide used but good jeans to a homeless shelter in Fargo. They set a goal of 100 pairs. The students split into teams with assigned duties to help make the project a success. Some students were in charge of publicity, others visited classrooms to encourage other students to participate, others collected the jeans brought in each day and others kept the school posted as to the progress by daily updates on a barometer they made and placed just outside the chapel. Through the direction of their teacher, the students learned what is needed to make a project successful. The students knew going into project that 1 out of 3 homeless people are under the age of 18. They used their gifts of time and talent to make this project a success in that they surpassed their goal by gathering in 206 pairs of jeans. Mr. & Mrs. Luther Dietrich, who have two children in the classroom arranged for the jeans to be taken to Fargo.
